NEWSLETTER August 2007
Welcome to our New Season All the plays have been cast and our new season starts with "Abigail's Party" by Mike Leigh. The other plays for the season are: "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Casey "Don't Dress for Dinner" by Mark Canelotti "The Matchmaker" by Thornton Wilder Please see Forthcoming Events for more details of these plays. Play
Readings There was a very good turnout for all four of the play readings and in some cases the directors were spoilt for choice. Such a high turnout was very encouraging and we hope this is a good sign for the coming seasons. Although the parts are now all cast don't forget that there are many other non-acting roles that need filling in order to make a successful production. So why not volunteer to help out in a back-stage capacity? Wedding
Bells Congratulations to Suzanne Nolan and Steve Johnston who got married on Thursday 2nd August in County Mayo, Ireland. The wedding took place in Mulranny and according to Eric there wasn’t a drunk Irish priest in sight! Luckily, word of Eric’s penchant for impersonating inebriated Irish priests has not travelled to Ireland. Had the clergy seen those pictures of Eric as Father Malloy, stripped down to his boxers clutching a blow-up sex doll, I doubt whether the marriage would have been allowed to take place! Unlike “Fur coat and No Knickers” all went well, the bride looked beautiful and the sun came out! Shakespeare
in Shorts The production should have been renamed Shakespeare in Sou’westers for there were no shorts in sight at Hoghton Tower on what should rightly have been a hot, balmy sunny Sunday afternoon in July. Seventy intrepid adventurers braved the elements to watch four short extracts from Shakespeare be performed in the grounds of Hoghton Tower. There were scenes from “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, “King Lear”, “Twelfth Night” and “Macbeth” all presented against the magnificent backdrop of the Tower and its grounds. The weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the actors nor the audience, as it proved to be a very entertaining and enjoyable afternoon for all concerned. We had very positive feedback and once again we have been asked back next year. Well done to Paul Mason and the members of the drama club, for this was not only our first outdoor production, but as far as I am aware it’s also the first time we have performed Shakespeare. As Shakespeare himself would have put it: “it weren’t half bad”. There is an excellent slide show of the performance on the Lancashire Evening Post website. Subs Hoorah to that lovely Liz Fisher who has taken over as Subscriptions Secretary. Liz is much better organized than me and has already drafted an officious letter for those members who are late with their payments! Seriously though, we have kept membership fees to an absolute minimum and £10 is outstanding value which entitles you to say you belong to one of the finest drama clubs in the land! So make Liz’s job an easy one and pay up quick! Here’s to another successful season at Blackburn Drama Club! Good luck to all those members (especially the new members) involved with the first play of the season, “Abigail’s Party” and I look forward to seeing you all either at rehearsals or in the packed balcony of another full house at the theatre!
